The following is an important message from Lawrence N. Davis, International Representative, New York Political Director/Grassroots Coordinator.
Working Families His request is of vital significance to every working man and woman and their families both now and far into the future. These past few years have pointed out to us just what can happen if we remain politically silent on the sidelines.

"Brothers and Sisters it is important that we get as many members as we can to sign up for Political Action updates. Recently I asked the IBEW Political Department to send out an important announcement on the Unemployment Insurance Bills that we support for our unemployed members.
The International Political Department has the capability to send these messages to our members that are signed up on the E-Activist list.
Sadly we only have about 1200 members signed up in New York State. It is important that we reach out to our membership and get them political involved. Therefore I am asking you to reach out to your membership and ask them to sign up.

It is easy to do. Click on this link to go to the "The Working Families Network (WFN)"; under Participating Unions scroll to IBEW; click on go and sign up".

Telemundo IBEW 1212 Wins Arbitration vs Telemundo
"The disposition of the demand for arbitration (August 20, 2007) and the amended demand for arbitration (October 12, 2007) is made in favor of the Union. The grievance is sustained. As sought by the Union, the appropriate remedy is the following: (1) a cease and desist order against the Company from assigning bargaining unit work to non-bargaining unit personnel; (2) that bargaining unit members who were laid off on September 7, 2007, as a result of the improper assignments, be made whole; and (3) that the Arbitrator retain jurisdiction over the proper implementation of the remedy in the event that the parties are unable to agree thereon. (dated December 5, 2008)"

With the above statement arbitrator Robert E. Light confirmed Local 1212 the winner of the arbitration filed by the Union to contest the Company's violation of the Agreement as outlined briefly above. For the complete text of the Arbitrator's decision download a zip of the pdf file below.

George Carlin Carlin Was Right About Workers' Plight
by Vince Beltrami ...president of the Alaska AFL-CIO
Three things happened last week that all juxtaposed in my mind. George Carlin died, I took right-wing radio mouth Dan Fagan to task on the Employee Free Choice Act because he had it all wrong, and the Exxon Valdez verdict came down from the Supreme Court. ...read the entire article »

United Nations The Final Day
An inside look at what turned out to be a very successful "Final Day" of contract negotiations between the Local and the VSG/United Nations employer. "You can never adequately prepare yourself for the feeling of possibly walking into work for the last time. Little procedural things that you take for granted take on hyperbolic significance. Is this the last time I'll ever put my briefcase through the security scanner? Will my pass ever open another door? Is this the last time I'll ever write my name on the sign-in sheet? Little things..."     read the entire article »

EWMCA report from the Eighteenth Annual Electrical Workers Minority Caucus  by Eloida G. James

Last year Viacom attempted to "rollback" virtually all of the benefits it had been providing to the people they call "freelance" employees.
Read the intriguing account of how the combined efforts of many dedicated people quickly won concessions from Viacom on many of these issues. WMUR WorkersLast year, a group of workers at WMUR in New Hampshire voted to join a union—IBEW Local 1228.
But management didn’t want to negotiate a contract with them—and there’s nothing in U.S. labor law that says employers must agree to a contract.

So, until this month, the workers had no contract. Then, one after another, the Democratic presidential candidates started writing letters to WMUR-TV General Manager Jeff Bartlett urging him to go back to the bargaining table and work out an agreement.   more »
